A city of its own
Southside Place is an independent general-law city of roughly 0.25 square miles, surrounded by West University Place, Bellaire and Houston. Its 2020 census population was 1,835. Developer E. L. Crain bought the land, once part of the Harris County Poor Farm, in 1924, and the neighborhood opened on Easter Day 1925. The council declared it an incorporated city by resolution in 1934, and addresses still use Houston in the mailing line.
Crain built the park before the houses. Today Southside Place Park, between Auden and Edloe on Garnet and Farber, has a pool, tennis courts, a ball field, a basketball court and a clubhouse residents can rent. City Hall, police and the volunteer fire department share 6309 Edloe. Because the town is so compact, a moving truck parked on one block is visible to nearly everyone, so we plan placement carefully.
Housing started with Colonial, Spanish and English bungalows, and many have since been replaced by larger new homes. Every business in town sits along Bellaire Boulevard, where the four-story, 269-unit Sinclear apartments replaced the Blair House complex. Students north of Bellaire Boulevard are zoned to West University Elementary and those south of it to Mark Twain Elementary, with all pupils zoned to Pershing Middle School.
FAQ's
Common questions about moving with Tera in Southside Place.
No. Southside Place is its own general-law city with its own council, police, volunteer fire department, water and sanitation services, even though mail is addressed to Houston and the ZIP code is 77005. Its own rules apply to construction and street use, so we recommend checking with City Hall at 6309 Edloe about anything like a portable storage container.
