Know Kyle

Kyle's roots, growth and getting around

Kyle traces back to the International-Great Northern Railroad, which built through land owned by Fergus Kyle. His family deeded 200 acres for the town, which was platted in 1880, and the first lots were auctioned beneath the Auction Oak. Kyle incorporated in 1928, and in 1937 Fergus Kyle's daughter, Mary Kyle Hartson, was elected mayor. The city ZIP code is 78640.

Growth has been fast. Kyle's population went from about 28,000 in 2010 to roughly 45,700 in 2020, and most of that came from new subdivisions. For movers that means modern homes with wide garages, but also HOA rules and streets that fill with parked cars on weekends. Interstate 35 runs through town, with FM 1626, FM 150, SH 21 and SH 123 among the other routes, plus the SH 45 toll road nearby.

Lake Kyle Park on Lehman Road is the city's largest developed park at about 118 acres, with a 12.5-acre lake, fishing dock, trails and a link to the Plum Creek Trail. Plum Creek drains central and eastern Kyle, while the Blanco River runs along the west side. Hays CISD serves local students, and Kyle was named the Pie Capital of Texas in 2021.

Moving-day tips for Kyle

  • Ask your HOA how long a moving truck may park on the street, and notify neighbors if you need extra curb space.
  • If you live near Lehman Road and Lake Kyle Park, expect busier traffic on weekend afternoons during nice weather.
  • Homes near the Blanco River on Kyle's west side may see flooded roads after heavy storms; watch the forecast before move day.
  • Pack a first-night box with sheets, chargers and kitchen basics so you are not digging through the truck.
