About the Katy Prairie
The Katy Prairie is not a city or a single subdivision. It is a section of the Western Gulf coastal grasslands in western Harris and Waller counties, near Katy. Historically it covered about 500,000 acres and reached west toward the Brazos River bottoms, though more than half of it had been lost to development by the early 2000s. Today it is a mix of working rice farms, cattle ranches, protected preserves and fast-growing residential communities on its eastern and southern edges.
Much of the remaining prairie is protected by the Coastal Prairie Conservancy, founded in 1992 as the Katy Prairie Conservancy. Its contiguous Katy Prairie Preserve covers nearly 20,000 acres, with a stated goal of 30,000. Places like Warren Ranch, the Indiangrass Preserve and Katy Prairie Welcome Center, and Harris County's Paul D. Rushing Park on Katy Hockley Road anchor the landscape. For residents, that means open views and wildlife, along with plenty of two-lane farm roads.
New neighborhoods keep pushing onto the prairie's edge. Developers like the one behind Elyson, a 3,600-acre community off the Grand Parkway between I-10 and US 290, describe their projects as honoring the Katy Prairie's legacy. Moving here often means a brand-new home, a long drive on Katy Hockley Road or FM 362, and a lot that may sit next to farmland. Prairie soils also hold heavy rain, and the area helps absorb storm water that would otherwise flow toward Houston, so wet-weather planning matters.
