The town began where the Chisholm Trail crossed Brushy Creek, at a low-water crossing marked by a round, table-shaped rock. A community formed there in 1851 and took the name Round Rock in 1854. When the railroad arrived about three-quarters of a mile away, business moved to the station, creating New Town (today's downtown) and leaving the original settlement as Old Town. The rock itself is still a local landmark.
